ANÁLISE DA CADEIA PRODUTIVA DA CAPRINO-OVINOCULTURA EM GARANHUNS AgEcon

Analysis of Coordination between the Public Service in Rural Areas and Socio-economic Development - a Case Study of Sichuan Province AgEcon
He, Ye; Wang, Fang-min.
Taking Sichuan Province as an example, by using the overall evaluation function of Sichuan's rural public service equalization development level and rural socio-economic development level. We conduct profound analysis on coordination between public service in Sichuan's rural areas and socio-economic development from 2003 to 2008. The results show that the coordination between rural public service and socio-economic development in Sichuan Province is not high, and the equalization phenomenon of rural public service construction and socio-economic development is very prominent. The equalization development of public service in rural areas of Sichuan Province from 2003 to 2008 lags behind socio-economic development. The coordination between public service...

Business Organization and Coordination in Marketing Specialty Hogs: A Comparative Analysis of Two Firms from Iowa AgEcon
Hueth, Brent; Ibarburu, Maro A.; Kliebenstein, James B..
We study business organization and coordination of specialty-market hog production using a comparative analysis of two Iowa pork niche-marketing firms. We describe and analyze each firm's management of five key organizational challenges: planning and logistics, quality assurance, process verification and management of "credence attributes," business structure, and profit sharing. Although each firm is engaged in essentially the same activity, there are substantial differences across the two firms in the way production and marketing are coordinated. These differences are partly explained by the relative size and age of each firm, thus highlighting the importance of organizational evolution in agricultural markets, but are also partly the result of a formal...

Can supply chain's coordination mechanisms include small holders? Insight from an empirical work in Costa Rica. AgEcon
Faure, Guy; D'Hotel, Elodie Maitre; le Coq, Jean-Francois; Saenz, Fernando.
Small holders' agriculture is currently facing new stakes due to State's withdrawal from agricultural support and to higher market requests for producing agricultural products. Different coordination mechanisms can be observed inside the supply chains involving farmers, farmers' organizations, and others stakeholders. They depend on the nature of the product, the characteristics of the stakeholders involved, the technical specifications related to the transactions, and the institutional environment. Relying on a comparative case study methodology, the paper analyzes the consequences of different coordination mechanisms on inclusion or exclusion of small farmers in the northern region of Costa Rica. Market coordination could be an efficient way to integrate...

Contract Production of Green Peas AgEcon
Olesen, Henrik Ballebye.
This paper analyzes a contract between farmers and a large company in the Danish food industry, Danisco Foods. Production of green peas requires a very accurate coordination, which is obtained through centralized decision-making. The contract is based on a tournament system providing risk sharing between the farmers. General problems from the contract theory such as hold up, moral hazard, risk sharing and screening are analyzed. The paper illustrates the tradeoffs between these problems in design of contracts. By negotiating the contract through a pea-growers association, the farmers gain some bargaining power. Thus the farmers can ensure that Danisco Foods uses only one contract for all farmers. This paper analyzes the consequences of the farmers'...

Cooperation, Spatial-Dynamic Externalities, and Invasive Species Management AgEcon
Epanchin-Niell, Rebecca S.; Wilen, James E..
Most terrestrial biological invasions occur in landscapes comprising numerous, independently managed properties. Thus, control of invasion spread generally depends on the choices of many managers, each deciding the extent to control invasions on their property. Here we develop a spatially-explicit, integrated model of invasion spread and human behavior to examine how people’s control choices under laissez-faire affect patterns of invasion spread and the total costs and damages imposed by an invader. We evaluate how characteristics of the bioeconomic and social system, including the extent of cooperation among managers, affect the divergence between socially optimal and private control efforts. We find that system-wide invasion externalities generally...

Coordinating Development: Can Income-based Incentive Schemes Eliminate Pareto Inferior Equilibria? AgEcon
Bond, Philip; Pande, Rohini.
Individuals’ inability to coordinate investment may significantly constrain economic development. In this paper we study a simple investment game characterized by multiple equilibria and ask whether an income-based incentive scheme can uniquely implement the high investment outcome. A general property of this game is the presence of a crossover investment point at which an individual’s incomes from investment and non-investment are equal. We show that arbitrarily small errors in the government’s knowledge of this crossover point can prevent unique implementation of the high investment outcome. We conclude that informational requirements are likely to severely limit a government’s ability to use income-based incentive schemes as a coordination device.

Coordination after gains and losses: Is prospect theory’s value function predictive for games? AgEcon
Schade, Christian; Schroeder, Andreas; Krause, Kai Oliver.
We analyze the effects of prior gain and loss experiences on individuals’ behavior in two coordination games: battle of the sexes and simultaneous market entry. We propose subjectively transformed games that integrate elements of prospect theory, aggregation of prior and subsequent payoffs, and social projection. Mathematical predictions of behavior are derived based on equilibrium selection concepts. Males’ behavior in our experimental studies is largely consistent with our predictions. However, the behavior of many female respondents appears to be rather consistent with interpreting the initial random lottery outcomes used to manipulate prior experiences as a signal for the players’ abilities to compete. This could be related to females’ known uneasiness...

Coordination and Strategic Behaviour in Landscape Auctions AgEcon
Valle, Haydn; Capon, Timothy; Harris, Michael; Reeson, Andrew.
Designing a conservation auction where bidders know the ecological value of their land poses challenges for policy makers because bidders will tend to increase their asking price. This is known as strategic behaviour, and it is particularly prevalent in sequential auction settings. The tender process ceases to be competitive when strategic behaviour occurs, eroding the efficiency advantages of an auction. To overcome this problem, contract options can be designed such that early winners are restricted in their efforts to strategically manipulate auction outcomes. Simply offering multi-period contracts could achieve this goal if participants need to wait for their contracts to expire before they can change their asking price. This idea was tested in a...

Coordination autour d'une ressource commune et logiques d'acteurs. Une analyse au travers des usages agricoles et ostréicoles de l'eau dans le bassin versant de la Charente ArchiMer
Rivaud, Audrey.
The analysis of the coordination upon common resources has been focused essentially on the question of the choice of management instruments in order to guide the behavior of the economic agents. Therefore, the potential role of actors’ behaviors, upstream from the process of coordination, is insufficiently studied. This explains partially the failure of some of these instruments. Thus, the aim of our research consists in constructing a theoretical framework able to explain upstream determinants of the coordination. We integrate, in this perspective, the potential effect of institutional and technological variables, and effects linked to the local dynamics towards the strategies adopted by the actors. In the empirical part of our study we concentrate on the...

Coordination Mechanisms along the Supply Chain: a Key-Factor for Competitiveness AgEcon
Carbone, Anna; Galli, Francesca; Sorrentino, Alessandro.
The purpose of this paper is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of relationships between stakeholders in the supply chain as a potential source of competitive advantage. In the case study, we focus on the wine industry in the Lazio Region (Italy). We observe a significant loss of competitiveness in this industry and we suggest that a higher level of communication and different coordination mechanisms among stakeholders could help in recovering a better market position. We focus on the linkages between farmers and the other food chain stakeholders through the perspective of Institutional Economics and Economics of Organization, in order to identify the key factors that determine the competitiveness of the supply chain’s product. The Lazio...

GOVERNANÇA E CONVENÇÕES NO SISTEMA PRODUTIVO DO PEIXE NA REGIÃO DE DOURADOS E CAMPO GRANDE, MATO GROSSO DO SUL AgEcon
Leao, Flavia Rover; Sproesser, Renato Luiz; Vilpoux, Olivier Francois; Rosina, Leonice; Campeao, Patricia.

IMPORTANCE OF LEADERSHIP AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR THE PERFORMANCE OF THE POULTRY SECDTOR IN ARGENTINA AgEcon
Senesi, Sebastian; Vilella, Fernando; Palau, Hernan.
The Argentine “industrial aviculture” started by 1960. The great development of the poultry sector was during the 1990s as a consequence of the direct price transfer due to technological and organizational improvements achieved in the sector. The objective of this paper is to identify how leadership and entrepreneurship have been important elements in the development of the Argentine poultry sector. The poultry sector is one of the faster development in Argentina and one that offers higher quality. This was achieved only because of great coordination due to leadership and entrepreneurship both at micro and macro level.

Marine mammal strandings: technical control on site OMA
Tavernier, J..
Strandings of marine mammals are always an unusual occurrence. Whether the animals are living or dead, these events require the input of many services and people. Techniques can be implemented to protect the animals, stabilise them, transport them, or -when they are dead- dispose of them properly. Technical coordination on the beach is therefore an important factor for success. The paper examines the various possible types of strandings and the different methods of intervention.

Market and Coordination Failures in Poor Rural Economies: Policy Implications for Agricultural and Rural Development AgEcon
Dorward, Andrew; Kydd, Jonathan; Poulton, Colin.
This paper argues that the disappointing outcomes of adjustment policies in poor rural economies, principally in sub-Saharan Africa, can be partly attributed to weaknesses in the neo-classical theory which underlies these polices and from associated failures to recognise structural changes (or transitions) in growing agricultural economies. After a brief description of agricultural policy changes in sub Saharan Africa, the mixed achievements of market liberalisation policies are explained using new institutional economic arguments regarding inherent difficulties in economic coordination in poor economies, difficulties which markets themselves cannot overcome. A novel framework is put forward for understanding coordination failure and integrating it with...

Membership: an Organizational View AgEcon
Gray, Thomas W..
This study examines the membership structure of a large centralized cooperative from an organizational workability view. Structure is created by dividing membership organizationally, i.e., assigning different roles and tasks to different groups of members, as well as to individual members, and bringing coordination to these differentiations. The membership structure of the case cooperative was found large in number of members, highly differentiated, and well coordinated. The structuring, i.e., creating a division of labor among the membership, and the coordinating of these divisions is done in response to conditions in the membership environment.

Steuerung der Landnutzung durch Raumplanung: Instrumente und Kooperationsprobleme zwischen Landwirtschaft und Naturschutz AgEcon
Exler, Kathrin.
After describing a series of plans with implications for land use, this study aims to examine the collaboration problems which exist between the main groups involved and elaborate on potential legal solutions. Main results are the following: 1. German law requires that the interests of the farming community and nature conservation are taken into account in the overall consideration of planning decisions. Any specialist plans already available – bearing in mind the different procedures existing between the various federal states – must also be integrated into the planning process. 2. If farming interests or the interests of nature conservation and countryside protection cannot be asserted in the overall planning process as laid down by the law, the...

THE BEEF INDUSTRY IN TRANSITION: CURRENT STATUS AND STRATEGIC OPTIONS AgEcon
Singley, Rodger; Wachenheim, Cheryl J..
In recent years, the U.S. beef industry has lost a significant portion of its historically dominant market share, due both to changes in consumer preferences and to an increase in the price of beef relative to pork and poultry. Changes within the beef industry to improve its competitive position have been slow and relatively unsuccessful. Challenges faced by the industry include a fragmented marketing channel and mistrust among its many participants, lack of specificity in product quality evaluation, and a lengthy and complex production cycle. Future success in maintaining or gaining market share will depend upon the availability of timely information, including forecasts of consumer demand, and the development of incentives to encourage effective...

The evolution and performance of river basin management in the Murray-Darling Basin Ecology and Society
Ross, Andrew; Australian National University; a.ross@anu.edu.au; Connell, Daniel; Australian National University; daniel.connell@anu.edu.au.
We explore bioregional management in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) in Australia through the institutional design characteristics of the MDB River Basin Organization (RBO), the actors and organizations who supported and resisted the establishment of the RBO, and the effectiveness of the RBO. During the last 25 years, there has been a major structural reform in the MDB RBO, which has changed from an interstate coordinating body to an Australian government agency. Responsibility for basin management has been centralized under the leadership of the Australian government, and a comprehensive integrated Basin plan has been adopted. The driving forces for this centralization include national policy to restore river basins to sustainable levels of extraction,...

The Research of the Balanced Development of China’s Urban-rural Spatial Integration Based on the Evolution of Regional Spatial Structure AgEcon
Duan, Lu-feng; Zhang, Hong.
The general law of regional spatial evolution is researched. In the process of the evolution of four stages, namely the early stage of traditional agriculture and industrialization, the middle stage of industrialization, the later stage of industrialization and post-industrialization, the types of space are homogenized space, polarized space, pole-axis space and integrated space respectively; the choosing of the spatial location is influenced by economy, society and environment, and the spatial structure extends along with three-dimensional space. Based on the fact that China’s urban-rural spatial structure evolution develops rapidly, and the outstanding characteristics of dual structure becomes the main obstacle to urban-rural balanced development, the...
